Understanding structural steel grades, international standards, and how steel selection affects steel building design, cost, and procurement.
01. What Is a Steel Grade?
A steel grade identifies a set of requirements for a specific type of steel. These requirements can include yield strength, tensile strength, chemical composition, elongation, impact performance, and other material properties.
Yield Strength —
Tensile Strength —
Chemical Composition —
Elongation —
Impact Performance —
Material Quality Requirements —
A steel grade is therefore more than simply a strength number.
For example, two steel grades may have similar yield strength but belong to different standards and have different chemical, testing, or certification requirements.
02. Common Structural Steel Grades
The following grades are commonly encountered in steel building projects.
|---|
| Q235 | GB | Approx. 235 MPa | General structural applications /
| Q355 | GB | Approx. 355 MPa | Main frames, beams and columns /
| S235 | EN | Approx. 235 MPa | General structural applications /
| S275 | EN | Approx. 275 MPa | Building and structural applications /
| S355 | EN | Approx. 355 MPa | Steel buildings and industrial structures /
| ASTM A36 | ASTM | Approx. 250 MPa | General structural applications /
| ASTM A572 Grade 50 | ASTM | Approx. 345 MPa | Buildings and industrial structures /
Typical nominal values are shown for general reference. Actual requirements depend on the applicable standard, product form, thickness and project specification.
Important:
Q355 is not automatically the same as S355, and S355 is not automatically the same as ASTM A572 Grade 50.
Although some mechanical properties may be similar, the applicable standards, chemical composition, testing requirements and certification requirements can be different.
For international projects, the steel grade should always be considered together with the applicable design and material standard.
03. Why Does Steel Grade Matter?
Steel grade can affect several aspects of a steel building project.
Material Cost
Different steel grades may have different procurement prices and availability.
Structural Design
Steel grade is one of the factors considered by structural engineers when determining member sizes and structural capacity.
Steel Weight
Depending on the structural design, material strength can influence the required member sizes and overall steel quantity.
Fabrication
Material selection may also affect welding, fabrication and quality-control requirements.
Procurement
The specified grade and standard can determine which suppliers and material sources are suitable.
04. Is Higher-Strength Steel Always Better?
Not necessarily.
A higher-strength steel grade is not automatically the best choice for every project.
The correct approach is:
The right steel grade for the right application.
Steel selection should consider:
- Building span —
- Structural loads —
- Design standard —
- Building use —
- Environmental conditions —
- Fabrication requirements —
- Material availability —
- Total project cost —
For example, a standard warehouse may not require every structural member to use the highest available steel grade.
The appropriate grade should be determined according to the engineering requirements and applicable standards.
05. Steel Grades and Design Standards
International steel building projects may use different design and material standards.
Common standards include:
|---|---|
| GB | China /
| EN | Europe and international projects /
| ASTM | United States and international projects /
| JIS | Japan /
| AS/NZS | Australia and New Zealand /
| BS | United Kingdom and some international projects /
When requesting a quotation, customers should ideally specify:
Which design standard will be used for the project?
This information helps suppliers understand the expected material, structural and quality requirements.
06. What Should Buyers Specify?
When preparing a steel building RFQ, customers should provide as much of the following information as possible.
| Item / 项目 | What to Specify / 建议提供 |
|---|---|
| Steel Grade / 钢材等级 | Q355, S355, ASTM A572 Grade 50, etc. |
| Material Standard / 材料标准 | GB, EN, ASTM, JIS, etc. |
| Thickness / 厚度 | Required plate or section thickness / 板材或型材厚度 |
| Surface Treatment / 表面处理 | Painting, galvanizing or other treatment / 喷漆、镀锌等 |
| Quantity / 数量 | Weight, length or quantity if available / 重量、长度或数量 |
| Certification / 质量证明 | MTC or other required documents / 材质证明等 |
07. What Is an MTC?
MTC stands for Mill Test Certificate.
An MTC may provide information such as:
- Steel Grade —
- Heat Number —
- Chemical Composition —
- Mechanical Properties —
- Test Results —
For larger steel building projects, buyers may ask:
Can you provide the MTC for the supplied steel?
This can help the buyer verify whether the supplied material corresponds to the specified requirements.
08. Common Steel Grade Procurement Mistakes
1. Comparing Only the Price
The lowest material price does not always mean the lowest total project cost.
2. Looking Only at Yield Strength
Two materials with similar yield strength are not necessarily equivalent.
3. Ignoring the Design Standard
The steel grade should be evaluated together with the applicable design code and material standard.
4. Not Confirming Thickness
Material requirements can depend on the product type and thickness range.
5. Not Considering the Project Environment
Coastal, industrial, agricultural and humid environments may require different protection and material considerations.
09. Steel Grade Procurement Checklist
Before requesting a quotation, consider the following:
| Question / 采购问题 | Customer Answer / 客户填写 |
|---|---|
| Where is the project located?<br/> | ______________________________ |
| What is the building used for?<br/> | ______________________________ |
| What is the building span?<br/> | ______________________________ |
| Which design standard applies?<br/> | ______________________________ |
| Is a steel grade specified?<br/> | ______________________________ |
| What thickness is required?<br/> | ______________________________ |
| Is MTC required?<br/> | ______________________________ |
| Is surface treatment required?<br/> | ______________________________ |
| Are structural drawings available?<br/> | ______________________________ |
| Is a BOQ available?<br/> | ______________________________ |
10. Making a Better Steel Procurement Decision
A good procurement decision should not be based on steel grade alone.
Consider the complete project requirement:
Design Standard + Steel Grade + Thickness + Application + Environment + Certification + Cost
This approach helps buyers compare suppliers on a more meaningful basis.
Instead of asking only:
“What is your steel price?”
buyers can ask:
“What steel grade, standard and certification are included in your quotation?”
11. When You Are Not Sure Which Steel Grade to Choose
Not every customer needs to determine the final steel grade before starting a project inquiry.
If you have drawings, dimensions, project location or other available information, you can provide them for an initial review.
Some technical details can be clarified during the project consultation process.
A useful starting package may include:
- Project Location —
- Building Use —
- Building Dimensions —
- Available Drawings —
- Design Standard —
- Steel Grade —
- Required Quantity —
- Special Requirements —
