Steel is strong, durable and widely used in building structures. However, exposed steel can be affected by corrosion when it is exposed to moisture, salts, chemicals or other aggressive environmental conditions.

For this reason, corrosion protection should be considered during the early stages of steel building design and procurement.

Two commonly used approaches are:

Paint coating systems

and

Hot-Dip Galvanizing (HDG)

The appropriate solution depends on the project environment, component type, required service life, maintenance strategy, design requirements and applicable standards.

01. Why Steel Corrosion Protection Matters

Corrosion can gradually reduce the effective thickness and performance of steel components.

The risk of corrosion varies significantly between different environments.

For example, a steel building located in a dry inland area may have very different corrosion exposure from a building located:

  • Near the coast
  • In a humid tropical climate
  • In an agricultural environment

  • In an area exposed to chemicals

04. What Is Hot-Dip Galvanizing?

Hot-dip galvanizing is a process in which fabricated steel components are immersed in molten zinc to create a metallurgically bonded zinc coating.

The zinc coating provides both barrier protection and sacrificial protection.

If the zinc surface is damaged in a limited area, the surrounding zinc can provide a degree of sacrificial protection to exposed steel.

Hot-dip galvanizing is widely used for steel components that require durable corrosion protection, particularly where access for future maintenance may be difficult.

The zinc coating can provide long-term protection when properly specified for the environment.

Factory-Controlled Process

Galvanizing is performed through a controlled industrial process.

Protection of Multiple Surfaces

When properly designed and processed, galvanized components can receive zinc coating over external and internal surfaces that are accessible to the molten zinc.

Reduced Maintenance

For suitable applications, galvanizing can reduce the frequency of maintenance compared with some conventional coating systems.

07. Duplex System

For some projects, paint and hot-dip galvanizing can be used together.

This approach is commonly known as a duplex system.

The basic concept is:

Hot-Dip Galvanizing + Paint Coating

The galvanized layer provides zinc protection while the paint system adds another protective barrier and allows greater control over appearance.

When properly designed, a duplex system can provide enhanced corrosion protection and extend the service life of the protective system.

However, the coating compatibility, surface preparation and application procedure need to be properly controlled.

08. Choosing a Solution by Project Environment

There is no single corrosion protection method suitable for every building.

Dry Inland Environment

A suitable paint coating system may provide sufficient protection depending on the project requirements.

Humid or Tropical Environment

Greater attention should be given to moisture exposure and coating durability.

Coastal Environment

Salt exposure can significantly increase corrosion risk. A more robust corrosion protection system may be required.

Agricultural Buildings

Poultry houses, livestock buildings and other agricultural facilities may have elevated moisture and corrosive exposure depending on ventilation, waste, chemicals and cleaning conditions.

Industrial Environment

Chemical exposure and airborne contaminants should be considered when selecting the protection system.

09. What Should Buyers Specify?

When requesting a quotation, buyers should provide as much corrosion-related information as possible.

Useful information includes:

  • Project location
  • Environmental conditions
  • Indoor or outdoor exposure
  • Coastal or inland location
  • Required service life
  • Desired coating system
  • Paint color
  • Coating requirements
  • Hot-dip galvanizing requirements
  • Applicable standards
  • Components requiring special protection

If the final corrosion protection system has not yet been decided, simply provide the project environment and intended building use.

The supplier and engineering team can then discuss suitable options.

10. Corrosion Protection Should Be Considered as Part of the Building System

Corrosion protection should not be treated as an isolated product decision.

It should be considered together with:

  • Structural design
  • Steel grade
  • Component thickness
  • Drainage
  • Roof and wall systems
  • Fasteners
  • Building maintenance
  • Local environment

For example, poor drainage can increase water exposure even when a high-quality coating system is used.

Therefore, good corrosion protection starts with good building design.
